On the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the US submitted a draft resolution to the UN. This resolution expresses condolences for the victims of the “Russian-Ukrainian conflict” and underscores that the UN’s primary mission is to uphold international peace, security, and facilitate peaceful resolution of disputes. The document also calls for “the earliest possible end to the conflict and the achievement of lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.”
The document reflects negotiation points that have been proposed by the Russian government. The Russians want to add provisions about “eliminating the root causes of the conflict” as part of the process to end hostilities.
Furthermore, the Trump administration has requested Ukraine withdraw its draft resolution, which has already been agreed upon with other partner countries, that condemns Russian aggression and demands the withdrawal of troops from Ukrainian territory. Kyiv has refused to comply.
The UN General Assembly is set to meet on February 24 to vote on a resolution drafted by Ukraine and the EU, which advocates for de-escalation, an early cessation of hostilities, and a peaceful settlement consistent with the UN Charter and international law.
