Washington is in talks with Kyiv about expanding the scale of strikes in the territory of the Russian Federation, said John Kirby, coordinator of strategic communications at the National Security Council of the White House.
“We have changed our approach in supporting Ukraine,” said Kirby.
Last week, the US and several EU countries allowed Ukraine to attack targets in Russian territory with Western weapons, but the US permission enables only the use of the HIMARS artillery system, with a range of up to 70-80 km. Washington, for now, continues to prohibit the use of ATACMS long-range missiles outside of Ukraine.
Kyiv has already taken advantage of its new ability and has destroyed at least two launchers and several auxiliary vehicles from the S-300/S-400 air defense system in the Belgorod region using HIMARS.
Meanwhile, Italy’s foreign minister confirmed that Rome plans to send another SAMP/T air defense system to Ukraine.
