The national security package that has been proposed for consideration by the US Congress, which combines aid to Ukraine with border policy reforms, will most likely be divided, said House Speaker Mike Johnson during a meeting with parliament members of the Baltic countries.
However, it is not clear whether the division of the package will mean that the House will hold a separate vote on all its parts, including aid to Ukraine. A separate vote on military aid to Kyiv could lead to criticism of Johnson from right-wing lawmakers who oppose further support for Kyiv.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s press secretary, Raj Shah, downplayed the comments and said they were made in a hypothetical context.
Johnson himself noted that the next course of action cannot be determined until the text of the future border security agreement is published.
