The US and Ukraine have signed a security agreement in Italy, sending a strong signal to Russia.

The bilateral security agreement signed between the US and Ukraine guarantees military support for Ukrainian forces both now and in the future and serves as a signal to Putin that America is ready to act decisively, said White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

He said that 15 countries have already signed bilateral agreements with Ukraine. The agreement outlines a clear vision of the US’ cooperation with Ukraine as well as with other allies and partners to further strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

“Any lasting peace in Ukraine must be ensured by the ability of Ukrainians to defend themselves and deter future aggression,” Sullivan noted, adding that the agreement is a signal to Russia of US determination.

Through the agreement, the US will also secure Ukraine’s commitments to reform and monitoring the end-use of weapons, and the US administration will commit to working with Congress to find sustainable resources to support Ukraine.
