The United Nations has responded to Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for High Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, reminded Russia that there are no winners with nuclear weapons, only casualties. “Increasing the level of nuclear combat readiness by the Russian Federation only increases the risk of catastrophic miscalculation. There are no winners with nuclear weapons. Only victims. For our safety, restraint, de-escalation, and risk reduction are urgently needed”, the message read. Earlier on Sunday, US Permanent Representative to the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield, told CBS News that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to bring the country’s nuclear deterrent into combat readiness was an escalation of aggression that was “absolutely unacceptable.”
