The Ukrainian government announced a new operation model for the Ukrainian gas transport system after ceasing Russian gas transit.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal stated: “The Ukrainian gas transportation system now operates without the transit of Russian gas and will implement a new operational model this year. We will pay special attention to the development of the concept, ‘Ukraine – the gas safe of Europe.'”

According to Shmyhal, one of the biggest challenges for this year remains energy. “Two key tasks for this year are the restoration and protection of energy facilities. At the same time, we will continue developing distributed generation and energy infrastructure to import more electricity from Europe,” the Prime Minister said.

A five-year transit contract between Naftogaz and Gazprom expired on January 1 2025, depriving Russia of approximately $5-7B in revenue annually. Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities are the largest in Europe, with over 31 billion cubic meters of volume located at a depth between 400 meters and 2 kilometers, deep enough to provide secure gas storage. Ukraine is ready to provide partners with the opportunity to store approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas.
