US President Donald Trump said his administration has already held “very serious” talks with Russia regarding the war in Ukraine and that he and Russian dictator Putin could soon take “significant” steps to end the conflict.
“We want to end this war,” Trump said.
He did not specify who from his administration had contacted the Russians but gave his assurance that the parties were already “talking.” When asked whether he had spoken directly with Putin, Trump refused to answer.
In turn, the US special envoy for Ukraine and Russian, Keith Kellogg, believes it is possible to achieve a permanent peace “within months.” He noted that ending the war as soon as possible is in the interests of the US as well as the entire global community.
“This is about months, not years. We have a solid plan of action to move forward, to start talking and working on this,” Kellogg said, adding that Trump knows “where and how to put pressure” on both sides to stop the war.
