The Senate approves the new US Secretary of State; Rubio says that Ukraine and Russia must both agree to concessions to end the war.

A few hours after US President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Senate confirmed Marco Rubio for the post of US Secretary of State. He becomes the first Cabinet official of the new administration to be approved by the House. Following his confirmation, Rubio said that the war between Russia and Ukraine needs to be ended as soon as possible, but each side will have to make certain concessions.

“We want the war to end. That’s quite clear. I can’t set a time frame, but I can say that every time you stop a conflict between two sides, neither of which can achieve its maximum goals, each side will have to give up something,” Rubio said.

He emphasized that Russia is the aggressor, but negotiations between the parties should take place through diplomacy.

In Rubio’s view, “Some of the groundwork has already been laid, but it will be difficult. This is a complex and bloody conflict, and it needs to be ended”.
