The US vice-presidential candidate from the Republican Party, JD Vance, said that Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Ukraine, among other things, could include the creation of a special demilitarized zone between Ukraine and Russia, similar to the current demarcation line. According to him, Ukraine will retain its sovereignty but, at the same time, must guarantee Russia that it will not join NATO or any other allied institutions.
Vance also stated that Russia should not have attacked Ukraine and blamed the struggle for money, particularly resources, as the real reason for the war. He called Ukraine a “resource-rich country” with “big corruption problems.”
According to Vance, Trump could bring the Russians, Ukrainians, and Europeans to the negotiating table to “find out what a peaceful settlement looks like.”
Trump has repeatedly stated that, if elected president, he would end the war within 24 hours but has not provided a clear strategy on how he would accomplish that. Previously, he said that he planned to reduce the price of oil by half or more within 12 months.
