Ukraine is getting closer to the EU, but the EU summit in December, which will discuss the expansion of the bloc, will be “difficult”, noted the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the President of Moldova, Maya Sandu, in Kyiv.
At the same time, Michel gave his assurance that he would do everything possible to ensure that the summit’s decision regarding Ukraine was favorable. He welcomed the promotion of critical anti-corruption reforms in Ukraine and the work being done for the country’s EU membership.
In her turn, Maya Sandu called on the EU for “speed and unity” in Ukraine and Moldova’s membership. “The urgency of these times, marked by war and lack of security, requires us to speed up our procedures,” Sandu said in Kyiv.
For his part, President Zelenskyy expressed hope that by the end of the year, in December, a decision will be made on the start of negotiations on joining the EU.
