European states are preparing for a possible change in Washington’s foreign policy regarding Ukraine and a weakening of military ties in the event of a Trump victory in the US presidential election.
The US’ closest allies in Europe anticipate a possible break in transatlantic relations should Trump win and are skeptical of his support for Ukraine. Politicians, diplomats, and analysts say they are better prepared for a possible second presidency, including an understanding of the diplomatic steps that would need to be taken and the development of various reaction strategies that can be employed in response to any changes in security or trade.
European officials believe that the Democratic candidate for the US presidency, Kamala Harris, will tend toward the policies of former President Barack Obama, rather than Joe Biden, and shift the US’ focus in favor of Asia.
“Regardless of who wins the US elections, America’s future attention will be increasingly focused on the Indo-Pacific region. Europe will have to do even more for its security,” said Michael Stempfle, a representative of the German Defense Ministry.
