The mineral deal between Ukraine and the US should be viewed within the context of negotiations for EU accession.

European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho noted that Brussels maintains constant communication and if Kyiv requests an assessment of an upcoming draft of a mineral agreement, the EC is prepared to assist. The EU emphasized that the document must align with Ukraine’s obligations related to European integration, particularly in terms of the accession negotiation process.

These discussions arose against the backdrop of concerns that the new version of the agreement reflects the US leadership’s intention to consolidate all Ukrainian resources under American control and restrict European access to them.

The Telegraph labeled the new version of the agreement a “document on the expropriation” of Ukrainian resources. The agreement also suggests a clear aim to hinder Kyiv’s progress toward EU membership and revert Ukraine to the role of an unauthorized transit point for Russian gas and oil.

Analysts suggest that with this agreement, Trump seeks to transform Ukraine into a resource province for American industry.

The WSJ highlighted that finalizing the terms of the new agreement could spark a new round of conflict between the US and Ukraine.
