Europe’s largest pan-European party association, the European People’s Party (EPP), has adopted a position document in which it calls on NATO to lay the groundwork for Kyiv’s entry into the Alliance in the long term.
The group expects the upcoming summits in Vilnius and Washington to pave the way for Ukraine to be invited to join NATO, with the accession process beginning after the war’s end and completed as soon as possible. The EPP is convinced that this will strengthen the Alliance and further promote sustainable peace in Europe.
In addition, it is emphasized that the previous Ukrainian security solutions – from the Budapest Memorandum to the conclusions of the Bucharest NATO summit – were not able to prevent a full-scale invasion by Russia, and Ukraine’s continued presence in the so-called gray zone will only encourage Moscow to resort to aggression again in the future.
