Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that a 30-day ceasefire is “impossible without resolving all the nuances”. The Kremlin also mentioned that they had not received Ukraine’s response to its proposed temporary truce.
However, President Zelenskyy highlighted that, against the backdrop of global calls for Russia to end the war and initiate a ceasefire, the aggressor launched Shahed drones at civilian infrastructure in the Cherkasy region on April 28. The President stressed that a ceasefire should not be temporary or merely convenient for Russia, but immediate, complete, and unconditional for at least 30 days to lay the groundwork for genuine diplomacy.
“Global pressure, US pressure could compel Russia to this very response,” Zelenskyy added.
According to French President Emmanuel Macron, pressure on Russia will escalate in the next 8-10 days.
At the same time, the ISW assesses the situation as Putin viewing the Victory Day ceasefire as an opportunity for Russian troops to regroup before future front-line operations and as a measure to ensure that Ukraine does not conduct long-range strikes on Russia during celebrations. The ISW believes that Putin does not perceive this ceasefire as a meaningful step towards enduring peace.
