The G7 is preparing a strike against the Russian Federation’s shadow fleet.

According to the FT, the G7 countries want to solve the issue of manipulation of tanker transponders that are turned off while at sea or do not transmit data about their destination ports. Using these methods every third barrel, or more than one million barrels per day, is exported from Russian seaports. In addition, the measures will affect “the failure of oil service providers to classify the costs of delivery, freight, customs, and insurance costs separately from the oil itself”.

Despite the current restrictions, the Russian Federation increased oil exports from April 24 to 28. Russian tankers exported 4.1 million barrels per day from seaports. Due to the active operations of the shadow fleet, which consists of dozens of tankers scheduled for scrapping, the average oil export from Russia over the past four weeks has reached 3.5 million barrels per day, a record since the war began.
