The Group of Seven (G7) countries and the EU plan to ban the import of Russian gas along routes where Moscow has previously cut supplies, reported Bloomberg. This decision will prevent the resumption of gas supplies through the Russian Druzhba pipeline via routes to countries such as Poland and Germany, where Russia stopped supplying gas last year.
However, the current authorization to import oil through the southern branch – to Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic will remain valid. The decision is intended to be formally approved by the G7 leaders at the Hiroshima summit, which begins on Friday.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, Russia has redirected its gas supplies to countries that have not imposed sanctions against the Kremlin. If passed, the restrictions would be the first targeted against Moscow’s pipeline exports since the start of the full-scale war.
