The European Union fails to agree on the Russian energy embargo.

The member states of the EU did not decide on a full ban or an increase in tariffs on imports of Russian oil and gas, stated the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell. “Stopping oil and gas imports or a punitive tariff would be important to pressure Putin and put him at the negotiating table. But now we in the EU do not have a single position on this issue,” Borrell told the magazine, Die Welt. Borrell said the issue would be discussed at the next EU summit in late May and that he did not expect any decision on the matter before then. According to Borrell, all EU countries are working to reduce their dependence on Russian oil and gas, adding that he believes the bloc will eventually be able to reduce its Russian energy reliance.
