The European Parliament proposes to increase the carbon duty for importers. According to Green Deal,

a Dutch Social Democrat, Mohammed Shahim, who is in charge of drafting the Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) bill in the European Parliament, proposed a stricter version of the mechanism than previously expected. Brussels reminds that the CBAM will be a supplement to the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Therefore, instead of quotas, the special CBAM certificates will be introduced, and bought by importers of carbon-intensive products in the EU. Certificate prices will be calculated based on the average auction quota price under the EU ETS.
