Three essential steps have been made on Ukraine’s path to EU membership. The first step, on February 28, was Ukraine applying to join the European Union, thus breaking the EU’s standard rules and procedures. The second step was on March 11, when the EU summit adopted a political decision on the “green light” for the Ukrainian application. However, it remained unclear how long the consideration of the Ukrainian application would last, as the summit also heard statements from EU leaders that the process could not be accelerated. And for Ukraine, time is crucial. However, On March 18, we overcame this stage as well. Negotiations between the Presidents of Ukraine and the European Commission ended with an agreement on a “fast track” – an accelerated path that will be used for the first time in the recent history of EU enlargement. According to estimates from Brussels, it should lead to a positive conclusion of the EC on Ukraine’s readiness for candidate status in a few months.
