The EU is preparing “specific” restrictions for the import of Ukrainian agricultural products.

Five EU countries will demand an extension of the grain embargo through the end of this year.

This week, the European Commission will present changes to EU trade legislation that will introduce restrictions on the importation of Ukrainian farm products to countries neighboring Ukraine, said EC for Trade Commissioner, Valdis Dombrovskis.

The proposal would include “country-specific safeguards” allowing Brussels to block imports if a country’s market becomes oversaturated. In effect, Brussels will control the flow of agricultural products from Ukraine if it threatens to lower prices in Poland and other neighboring countries.

These safeguards will be triggered when Ukraine gains full access to the EU market (currently, Poland and Hungary have unilaterally closed their markets). These measures are in effect until June 2025. They must first go through the approval procedure in the European Parliament.

At the same time, the introduction of quotas for Ukrainian poultry, sugar, and eggs is currently being considered.
