The EU has announced the 5th package of sanctions against Russia.

At a briefing on April 5, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the next package of sanctions. Here are the most critical sanctions that have yet to be approved by the EU Council in the next two days:

  1. a ban on the import of coal from Russia (a prohibition on the import of oil is being considered)
  2. A complete ban on transactions with four key Russian banks, including VTB, Russia’s second-largest bank. According to the president of the European Commission, these banks make up 23% of the entire banking sector of the Russian Federation.
  3. a ban on Russian ships and ships with Russian operators entering EU ports – but with certain exceptions, such as “agricultural products and foodstuffs, humanitarian aid, and energy.”
