Based on the existing raw material base, Ukraine can annually produce 21.8 billion cubic meters of biogas or biomethane, according to a DiXi Group report. It is noted that in terms of providing raw materials, the most promising regions for the biogas industry are Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Poltava, and Cherkasy.
Under favorable conditions, biomethane production in Ukraine may reach one billion cubic meters per year in 2030, 4.5 billion cubic meters per year in 2040, and 20 billion cubic meters per year in 2050. At the same time, half of the produced biomethane could be consumed domestically by the end of the forecast period. To achieve these biomethane production indicators by 2050, the industry will need €40B in investment.
The main obstacle to establishing biomethane production is the irregularity of the exportation of this gas to the EU, particularly its customs clearance. In addition, launching a biomethane register and an origin guarantee system is essential. As well, the issue of cross-border trade in biomethane has not been settled in the EU.
