European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson calls for intensifying efforts to support the Ukrainian energy industry ahead of winter. She noted that the Russian Federation has destroyed or captured about 9 GW of Ukrainian generation, which is half of the electricity Ukraine needs in winter. According to her, Ukraine’s partners are supporting it in every possible way to restore the energy sector, but much more needs to be done. In particular, she calls for action in six key directions:
- repair of damaged power facilities
- delivery to Ukraine of as many small, decentralized generators as possible
- deploying solar panels to provide electricity to hospitals, schools, public and residential buildings
- expansion of the maximum amount of electricity that can be exported to Ukraine from the EU
- expanding opportunities for cross-network interaction at borders
- strengthening air defense near critical energy infrastructure facilities
