Starting today, Russia’s six-week suspension of tourist flights to Turkey is causing 533,200 canceled flight bookings,
the Russian Association of Tour Operators, said yesterday on its site. If each Russian tourist spends $600, Turkey loses $300 million. On Monday, two days after President Zelenskiy’s successful meeting with President Erdogan in Istanbul, the Putin government imposed the ban, citing elevated Covid cases in Turkey. Last year, 2.1 million Russians visited Turkey. Last year, about 1 million Ukrainians visited Turkey. Judging by a May-June surge in scheduled and charter flights, the number of Ukrainians will grow this year.
