On June 1, the Swiss National Council rejected a draft law allowing third countries to transfer Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine, but discussions on this issue continue. The Military Materials Act prohibits supplying Swiss weapons to belligerent countries except in exceptional cases, such as if the UN Security Council condemns the full-scale war against Ukraine, but Russia has veto power over any proposed UN resolutions.
There are several proposals under consideration for the current situation. One would allow the direct supply of military materials to Ukraine under certain conditions. In particular, weapons can be transferred only five years after their purchase in Switzerland, but only to Western countries and upon request. Also, the country it is planned to be given weapons must not be in a state of war unless it is defending itself, as Ukraine does.
