The upper house of the Swiss parliament rejected a request for permission to re-export Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine. Liberal representative Thierry Burkart stated that Germany, Spain, and Denmark applied to Switzerland for permission for re-exportation and have received a negative response. “Western partner countries are annoyed by this position,” the parliamentarian added. Most of the Security Committee members of the Cantonal Council recommended voting against the re-export permit for several reasons. First, some council members believe this may threaten Switzerland’s reputation as a neutral mediating state. Secondly, in their opinion, it is better to adopt the necessary amendments to the legislation through a parliamentary initiative.
