Spain has launched a railway route for Ukrainian corn export.

The Spanish railway operator Renfe Mercancías sent an experimental freight train to Ukraine to transport 600 tons of corn, bypassing Ukrainian seaports, reports El País. With the first train, the Spanish government seeks to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of grain rail transportation along the tracks from Łódź (Poland) to Barcelona (Spain). The length of the route is approximately 2,400 km. The planned transportation is between Ukraine and Spain with transshipment of goods in Helm, 25 km from the border with Ukraine. Renfe Mercancías containers departed August 9 and will arrive in Chelm on August 22-28 to load Ukrainian corn. After loading the containers, the train will run on the standard track from Łódź to Barcelona. The arrival of the pilot batch in Barcelona is anticipated in the beginning of September.
