Should Ukraine open its land market for EU citizens?

The UN’s FAO has failed to fulfill its promises to supply seeds, affecting Ukraine’s sowing campaign.

Companies have become more active in the land market, which is increasing prices.

According to Dmytro Lyvch, co-founder of the Center for Economic Recovery, allowing EU citizens and legal entities to enter the Ukrainian land market will benefit both foreigners and Ukrainians. This decision would contribute to attracting investment and help the recovery and growth of Ukraine’s economy.

According to the expert, foreign companies entering the Ukrainian market will bring new technologies, advanced practices, and skills that will contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector’s productivity. The most significant positive effect will be felt by landowners.

“Countries with more liberal market models are characterized by relatively higher land prices and rents, as well as faster growth rates. This will allow landowners to receive fair compensation from the sale of their property (both from sale and rent),” says Lyvch.

At the same time, he admits that opening the land market for foreigners is not an urgent issue. However, it is worth forming a vision, preparing proposals, and reforming legislation to consider Ukraine’s national interests.
