Since January, the Russian Federation has been trying to resume major offensive operations in Ukraine to seize the remaining Ukrainian-controlled portions of the Donetsk region. However, Russian troops managed to capture only a few hundred meters of territory in a week. British intelligence analysts explain this by the fact that Russia currently lacks the ammunition and maneuverable units necessary for a successful offensive. In addition, senior commanders, likely due to political and professional pressure, develop plans that require undermanned, inexperienced units to achieve unrealistic goals. As a result, it remains unlikely that Russia will be able to build up the forces necessary to influence the war’s outcome in the coming weeks significantly, experts say.
