However, Reuters sources indicate that Russian leader Putin is unlikely to accept the US’ proposed truce. Moscow perceives this as a trap, and it would be challenging for the Kremlin leader to halt the conflict without concrete guarantees or promises. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump hopes that Russia will agree to a ceasefire. He mentioned that US representatives plan to meet with their Russian counterparts in the coming days, expecting to find a way to end the war.
“If we can get Russia to do it, that will be great. If we can’t, we just keep going on and people are going to get killed, lots of people,” Trump emphasized.
He also indicated that he would speak to Putin this week. According to Trump, if Putin agrees to a ceasefire it would be “75% of the way” to peace in Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy, on the other hand, stated that if Russia dismisses the proposals made in Jeddah, Ukraine is counting on strong actions from the US, which includes increasing sanctions pressure on Russia and boosting military aid to Ukraine.
