On June 6, around three o’clock in the morning, Russian terrorists blew up the dam and the engine room of the Kakhovka HPP, located near the town of Nova Kakhovka in the temporarily occupied Kherson region. The station is completely destroyed and cannot be repaired, stated state company Ukrhydroenergo.
Water is escaping uncontrollably from the reservoir, causing a flood zone that encompasses 80 settlements. There is a threat of flooding at the Kherson thermal power plant, but the energy system is now operating stably. At the same time, it is predicted that the North Crimean Canal will dry up, and Crimea may remain without drinking water for years.
The defense forces say that by blowing up the hydroelectric power plant, the occupiers are trying to avoid facing the Ukraine’s forces on the left bank by preventing them from crossing the Dnipro River.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine considers the detonation of the dam as artificial and ecological terrorism, the largest man-made disaster in Europe in recent decades.
