One day of war costs Ukraine €102M in environmental damage

These estimates were shared by the Minister of Environmental Protection of Ukraine, Ruslan Strilets. He clarified that this amount does not include the damage from the Kakhovka HPP disaster.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the most affected areas are: the Donetsk region, where damages are UAH 666B, the Luhansk region – UAH 477B, and the Kharkiv region – more than UAH 361B. These are not final figures as there is currently no access to the occupied territories.

On the sidelines of the Vienna OSCE Conference on Climate Change Ruslan Strelets emphasized that the Russian war against Ukraine affects climate security and worldwide climate action. According to him, the war slowed the world on its way to climate neutrality by incurring more than 120 million direct and indirect carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Moreover, there will be emissions from the reconstruction of Ukraine. In monetary terms, these emissions are estimated at €10.2B.
