According to Reuters, amid uncertainty regarding the US’ future support for Ukraine stemming from the possible reelection of former President Donald Trump to the White House, the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, has proposed providing military assistance to Kyiv on a long-term basis along with multi-year financial commitments. However, the 32 NATO member states have different views on this plan. Their respective governments will try to resolve these differences at their meeting in Prague on May 30-31.
Stoltenberg’s proposal envisages that NATO will coordinate international military assistance to Ukraine through the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine (Ramstein). This would give the Alliance a more direct role in the war against Russia without using its forces. The Alliance will also coordinate the training of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
However, the US is the dominant power in NATO, so if Washington wants to cut Western aid to Kyiv, it can still do so.
