NATO is informally discussing ending the war and Ukraine's membership in the Alliance in exchange for territorial concessions.

According to La Republica, experts are considering such a scenario and so far, it has not been evaluated from a political point of view. At the same time, all decisions related to the war in Ukraine are frozen until the US presidential elections in November. The idea of a territorial concession on the part of Ukraine may come into force in the event of Donald Trump’s re-election.

In August of last year, the head of the office of the NATO Secretary General, Stian Jenssen, also suggested that Ukraine could acquire membership in the alliance in exchange for territory. However, he later clarified that his statement was “part of a broader discussion regarding scenarios for the future of Ukraine.”

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, believes that “exchanging NATO membership for Ukrainian lands is a dishonest conversation and an artificial provocation.”

However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg still assumes that Kyiv will have to make concessions. NATO members should help Ukraine to take a position that will enable it to achieve an acceptable result at the negotiating table.
