Russian troops have de-energized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

The lack of electricity can cause the release of radiation and high radiation exposure to personnel. An inoperative firefighting system may also fail to extinguish a projectile fire. Currently, the fighting continues, making it impossible to repair or resume the power supply at Chernobyl and Slavutich. The power supply allows for constant cooling of the 20,000 spent fuel assemblies at the spent nuclear fuel-1 storage facility, Energoatom explained. If they are not powered, the pumps will not be able to cool the spent fuel. As a result, temperatures in the holding pools would rise, causing steam formation and the release of radioactive substances into the environment. In addition, the wind may carry the radioactive cloud to other parts of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and other European regions.
