The preliminary results from the country’s parliamentary election on September 26 suggested that voters had not opted for any drastic change. Both leading parties, the conservative CDU and the center-left SDP seemed to have secured almost equal support, with the latter nevertheless easing ahead and poised to end 16 years of rule by its political rival, yet coalition partner.
