new pipeline.

France, Spain, and Portugal have decided to create a green energy corridor that will replace the MidCat main gas pipeline project, according to a statement issued following a meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa. The pipeline, called BarMar (Barcelona – Marseille), will be laid on the bottom of the sea and not through the Pyrenees, as MidCat had planned. The pipeline will be designed for hydrogen but, given the European energy crisis, it will also be able to transport natural gas. It is expected that it will bring the Iberian Peninsula out of isolation, allowing it to connect the energy networks of the EU countries, and accelerate the transition to green energy. In early December, the three countries’ leaders will meet in Alicante to decide on construction timing, financing sources, and other issues related to the BarMar project.
