European Union leaders meeting in Brussels last night called for Belavia to be banned from the 27-nation bloc’s airspace and urged EU-based carriers to avoid flying through Belarus airspace

, Reuters reports. Earlier, Lithuania, and Poland instructed airlines to detour around Belarus. This means that Belarus’ three Western neighbors no longer have flights to Minsk. Britain is instructing British airlines to cease flights over Belarus and is suspending the air permit for Belavia, BBC reports. KLM is suspending flights through Belarus airspace. Located on a flight path between the EU and Moscow, Belarus stands to lose millions of dollars in overflight fees.
