Europe is reducing its dependence on China and building its solar panel factory.

According to estimates by Holosolis, which will build the facility in France, it will be 70% larger than any currently available in Europe. The plant will start production in 2025 and its designed capacity is 5 GW per year, or 10 million photovoltaic modules yearly. The factory will be located in Sargemin on the border with Germany.

Holosolis indicates that the enterprise will reduce the European Union’s dependence on Chinese panels. Currently, China’s share of the world market is 80%, and the EU’s share is only 3%.

The new massive photovoltaic factory is part of the European REPowerEU plan, launched in 2022. It will accelerate progress towards 600 GW of solar power by 2030, up from 150 GW in 2022. The gigafactory is also one of the initiatives carried out within the European Solar and Photovoltaic Industrial Alliance (ESIA) framework.
