The German Defense Ministry announced the potential participation of its military in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if Kyiv and Moscow agree on a ceasefire. However, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius added that it was too early to discuss this as there had been no negotiations between the parties.

“If there is a ceasefire, the Western community, NATO allies, potentially the UN and the EU should discuss how such peace can be ensured. And it is obvious that Germany, the largest economy in Europe, will play its role there,” he said.

This role will depend on the ceasefire terms and the potential mandate for peacekeepers.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb also stressed the need for a balanced approach to the idea of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. At a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force countries, he made it clear that he did not take a specific position on the operation itself. According to him, it will require UN permission. Regardless, there is no peace at the moment, and Ukraine needs weapons first and foremost.
