Yuriy Korolchuk, an expert at the Institute of Energy Strategies, noted that the existing generation that survived Russian missile attacks will be able to produce about 11 GW of electricity. Thus, the deficit this winter is expected to be 4-5 GW.
He explained his forecast by saying that only nine NPP units with a total capacity of 7 GW are available. Currently, one unit is under repair, and it is unknown how the units will operate in the winter. Thermal power plants are currently being repaired and will be put into operation, which would provide an additional 2 GW, by the beginning of November. Output from thermal power plants and hydroelectric power plants total 2 GW.
At the same time, Korolchuk proposes the import of 11 GW of electricity as a backup option. In addition, this is an overestimated outlook given increased demand for electricity in the EU in winter. As well, solar and wind power plants cannot be considered in winter, although they can generate up to 3 GW of electricity per day in summer, Korolchuk said.
