Editor’s note:

Last night, the result of the German parliamentary election was still too close to call. Both leading parties, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the center-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) were neck and neck. For Ukraine and much of eastern and central Europe the question is what, if, any changes, the results might bring in Berlin’s foreign policy. Any new nuances are likely to be determined by whatever political partners are chosen by the party that ends up forming a coalition government, which in the case of the SPD could be the Green party that has adopted a more principled stand towards Russia. We await the final outcome, which might take considerable time.
