German Chancellor Merkel arrives in Moscow tomorrow to meet with Russian President Putin. Undoubtedly, the leaders – one from each end of the Nord Stream pipeline — will adopt pious poses and assure the naïve that Russia is not – and will not – use energy as a weapon. That is hard to believe when Gazprom pinches the gas hose, sending EU gas prices to their highest levels in memory. It brings to mind the sage advice of John Mitchell, President Nixon’s otherwise slippery Attorney General: “Watch what we do — not what we say.” With Best Regards, Jim Brooke
