On the 20th anniversary of the largest membership increase in the history of the EU, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the current candidate countries, including Ukraine, have a historic window of opportunity to link their future with the EU strongly. He emphasized that 20 years ago, the European family accepted ten new member states, a bold step that further united Europe.
“However, the work on the reunification of the continent still needs to be finished”.
EC Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said that it is essential to consider the applications of Ukraine and Moldova to join the EU quickly. According to him, it would be ideal if the EU countries agreed on the framework of negotiations before the European Council summit in June.
At the same time, the EU ambassador in Kyiv, Hugues Mingarelli, admitted that Hungary’s presidency of the EU Council in the second half of the year could slow the process of rapprochement with the EU.
The presidents of the Baltic states also called on the EU to start accession negotiations with Ukraine and have promised to support them.
