The project, called Power Link, was recently approved by the Australian government and will be implemented by SunCable, a renewable energy company. The power plant will be in the Northern Territory of Australia and will cover an area of 12,000 hectares. The project will bring more than $20B in economic benefits to the Northern Territory and create an average of 6,800 direct and indirect jobs each year during construction, with a peak workforce of 14,300. This figure is calculated based on the period of construction and the first 35 years of operation. The power plant will produce 4 GW of electricity per hour for domestic use. The two additional gigawatts delivered via submarine cable to Singapore will meet about 15% of the city-state’s needs. About 40 GW can be stored in batteries. The project is expected to receive a final investment decision in 2027, and the electricity supply will begin in the early 2030s.
