Poland has signed a $6B contract with South Korea to purchase 180 K2 tanks. The expansion of Poland’s tank forces is driven by the full scale war being waged against Ukraine by Russia and the crisis on the Belarusian border that has been ongoing since 2021. Notably, Poland currently allocates 4.7% of its GDP to defense, the highest among NATO countries. Once the contract is fulfilled, Poland will have a total of 1,100 tanks, surpassing the combined total of Germany, Italy, the UK, and France, which together have 950 tanks. Only Turkey and Greece will have more tanks than Poland – Turkey with 2,238 and Greece with 1,344. Poland’s tank purchases from South Korea began in 2022, and then-Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak called it a “win-win situation” for both nations. Along with the 180 tanks, the new agreement includes the supply of 81 support vehicles, personnel training, maintenance and repair programs, and technology transfer. Previously, the country purchased Abrams tanks from the US.
